About Me

Whether you’re reading this blog for the first time or you've stopped by before, welcome! I’m glad you’re here, and invite you to poke around and explore all you want.

I started this blog as a way of sharing stories and things I found regarding my ancestors—pictures, obituaries, tombstones, records, heirlooms, and more. My interest in family history goes way back, but I didn’t really begin researching until about ten years ago. The more I found, the more interested I became. And since I’m always happiest when I’m studying something, I plunged right into genealogical education. Over the past seven years, I’ve completed the National Genealogical Society Home Study Course and the ProGen Study Group program, attended national conferences and institutes, and developed my skills in the field.

All of this led to the launch of my business, Buckeye Family Trees, in 2012. I specialize in helping people find their Ohio ancestors. I particularly enjoy hunting in archives, courthouses, and newspapers to find things that aren't available online. I invite you to visit my website and have a look around there, too.

My husband and I have three children and a cat who thinks she rules the house. Like most families, we’re all busy (except the cat). In my spare time, I like to read, ride my bike, take pictures, watch movies, and visit with friends. But mostly, I like doing genealogy. Searching, finding, recording, analyzing, and piecing together—it’s like a giant puzzle. While it’s never done, the picture that emerges as the pieces fit together is fascinating.

I research in Central Ohio, and have ancestral roots in several Ohio counties. My families came from Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Germany. My husband’s families migrated from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, England, Northern Ireland, and Wales. All that makes for an interesting range of subjects! To see the names and places I’m researching, click on the “Ancestors” tab above. If you find we have some in common, please get in touch. I love meeting potential new cousins!

With A Sense of Family, I also try to share some of the resources, techniques, tips, and strategies I’ve gathered along the way. Feedback from my readers is always appreciated and welcome. Your comments, interests, experiences, and suggestions matter to me. I invite you to leave comments on my posts, or email me at sbishop@asenseoffamily.com. And if you like what you read and are not already a subscriber, I invite you to sign up to receive posts either by email or RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
