Evan Evans was a native of
Carno in Montgomeryshire, Wales, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1881. He and his
wife, Annie (whose maiden name was also Evans), lived in Bratenahl, Ohio. Their
granddaughter told me that they took the train out to California on vacation more
than once. This was taken at the Cawston Ostrich Farm in South Pasadena,
probably in the late 1920s. It looks like they were in for a fun ride, doesn’t
it? It’s one of my favorite photos.

ReplyDeleteIt makes me smile every time I look at it, Jana! Thanks for reading.
DeleteOh, yes! I enlarged the photo so that I could see the expressions on the faces. The two women are smiling, and Evan himself is looking definitely whimsical. So much fun!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had one of the wagon actually underway. Wouldn't that be a hoot?
DeleteThat's something you don't see every day!
ReplyDeleteThat is a super fun photo. I am always so glad when such a moment was recorded.
ReplyDeleteI can see why this would be a favorite photo, Shelley. It's such a clear, clean photo. I love the hats and coats the ladies are wearing. I wonder how many rode the cart at a time. It looks like there's space for one, maybe two. And I wonder how they trained the ostrich to pull it. Amazing!
